Dundee gun plan finding favour
A proposal last week from a Dundee councillor that would see the return of the city’s one o’clock gun has already proved a hit with the public, it emerged today.
Neil Powrie wants the canon blast restored after an 84-year absence to bring back a forgotten part of Dundee’s heritage. And it seems his idea may have already captured the imagination of Dundonians, some of whom have suggested locations for the gun.

Its original site was Dudhope Castle but it was taken out of commission after complaints concerning patients at the former Dundee Royal Infirmary.

Councillor Powrie told the Tele today he didn’t think Dudhope Castle was the most suitable location. He said, “I think the gun should probably be located at the waterfront, possibly in the Discovery Point area. I’ve already had emails from people suggesting various locations.

“But before we get bogged down with places it might go, we have first to establish the principle of the one o’clock gun.”

Councillor Powrie said he has already been in touch with the council’s administration leader Jill Shimi and she has requested he forward the details for consideration. Both the Scottish One O’clock Gun Association and VisitScotland support plans to reintroduce the gun.
