New air routes for Dundee?
The new operators of Dundee Airport have said they will try to bring new air routes to the city.
Scottish Executive-owned company Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd will assume control of the airport in September.

The firm currently runs 10 airports around the country — Sumburgh in Shetland, Kirkwall, Wick, Barra, Campbeltown, Portree, Islay, Benbecula, Stornoway and Inverness, where the company’s HQ is situated.

A spokesman for the company said today, “It has been agreed that HIAL will assume operation responsibility for Dundee Airport in September.

“We are working with the Scottish Executive and the city council to ensure a smooth transition. HIAL’s priorities for Dundee will be the safe and efficient operation of the airport while pursuing any air route development opportunities that may exist.”

Politicians from all parties in Dundee welcomed the transfer of the airport to HIAL after the deal was announced yesterday.

The airport was the only council-run facility of its kind in Scotland and cost taxpayers in Dundee more than £1.5 million a year, despite only offering flights to and from London City airport.

Dundee City Council administration leader Jill Shimi said the deal had guaranteed the airport’s long-term future and saved the people of Dundee money.
