| Police said today the haul, traced during an “ongoing, intelligence-led operation,” was the biggest-ever single seizure of the class A drug in Tayside.
Four people were arrested in connection with the incident – two men in their early 30s from Dundee, and a man and a woman in their mid-20s from Liverpool.
A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and all four are expected to appear before a sheriff on Monday.
Detective Inspector Iain Wales, head of the drugs branch, said, “This significant recovery of Class A drugs, as well as the arrests made, is clear proof of our determination to tackle drugs.
“A recovery of this size sends a clear message throughout the UK that Tayside Police will use all the powers at its disposal to disrupt trafficking.
“This action came as part of a long-running operation and we continue to work closely with other forces, our colleagues at Merseyside and the Scottish Crime & Drugs Enforcement Agency included.”
The seizure comes just days after a senior Dundee officer revealed police are dealing with drugs coming from England.
A major seizure of cocaine in the city late last year was allegedly linked to the Liverpool area, while a raid in May, which recovered £100,000 worth of the drug, followed surveillance operations involving Greater Manchester police.
Police have repeatedly warned about cocaine becoming more affordable and available in Tayside.
The price is said to have halved in recent years.
The force is also concerned that
dealers are now accepting only cash, rather than stolen property, and this has fuelled a rise in armed robberies and street crimes.
Detective Inspector Wales continued, “Cocaine is a highly-addictive and destructive drug and its cost to those who use it can be devastating in financial and health terms.
“Furthermore, the financial impact on the health services and on wider society due to crime to fund drug habits is considerable.
“Whether it be cocaine, heroin, or any other harmful illegal substance, Tayside Police will continue to take every opportunity to remove illegal drugs from our streets.” |
