| Ally Connell (21) had to summon skills he never knew he had on Tuesday night when girlfriend Stacey Craig (17) went into labour with the couple’s first child.
The engineer was called into action just after 10 pm, at the couple’s home in Thurso Gardens.
They knew Alisha was on her way after Stacey’s waters broke in the morning.
They spent most of the day liaising with medical staff at Ninewells Hospital, but Stacey’s contractions were too far apart for an imminent birth.
Ally explained, “At about 8 or 9 pm the pain went full blown.
“Stacey thought she needed the toilet but obviously it was getting really bad so I dialled 999. The operator said the paramedics were on their way.
“Stacey’s contractions were getting shorter and shorter and then she got a fright because she felt the baby’s head.
“The operator told me what to do but then I had to put the phone down because I couldn’t speak at the same time as help Stacey.
“So I just went ahead and did it.
“I have no idea how I knew what I was doing.
“I just kept telling Stacey to take deep breaths.”
Once Alisha had arrived, Ally cleaned her up and cleared her airways, before handing her over to a beaming Stacey.
The new mother, struggling to put into words what Ally had done, said, “I am really proud of him.”
Grandmother Wendy Connell said her son had done her proud, adding, “They are such a beautiful couple.
“I am so happy for them.
“He’s like a little celebrity down at the hospital. He was so calm.”
Staff midwife at Ninewells Christine Arthur paid tribute to Ally.
She said, “This kind of thing happens occasionally but it is amazing what he did.
“It takes a lot and you have to be quite calm.” |
