A “cowardly” mugger has left two Dundee pensioners traumatised after assaulting one and stealing a handbag containing a three-figure sum of cash from another. (writes Alan Wilson).
Detectives in Dundee are appealing for information after the thief struck in Lochee last night.

The victims, a 78-year-old woman and a man also in his 70s, were in the area between 11.05pm and 11.30pm.

The pair walked along Liff Road into Coupar Angus Road and then along Lochee High Street.

They were entering a common close when the thief approached them, knocked the elderly man to the ground, grabbed the woman’s handbag and ran off.

Both pensioners were left shocked by the incident, but were not injured. The mugger ran off along St Mary’s Lane and into Burnside Street.

He is described as being in his mid-to-late 20s, 6ft, slim and wearing a tan or khaki army-style jacket, grey trousers and a dark tammy.

Detective Constable Paul Riley today described the attack as “cowardly”.

He said although the couple were unhurt in the incident, they were traumatised by their ordeal and were too upset to talk to the Press about it.

DC Riley said, “Choosing elderly victims is a really cowardly thing to do. It’s easy prey and we would always condemn that.

“After the attack, the elderly man made an effort to watch where the assailant went, and this incident happened at the time when pubs and clubs would be emptying, so hopefully somebody will have seen the man and contact us.

“There is also CCTV in the area and we are reviewing that at the moment.”

Anyone with information that could assist inquiries is asked to call Tayside Police on 01382 223200, or speak to any officer.
