Nervous wait for workers

Dundee’s battered manufacturing sector is on course for another blow, with electronics firm Wound Magnetics set to axe 25% of its shop floor staff.
Employees were informed of the move last Thursday and have been nervously waiting to hear who is to go.

The company’s plant in Dundee employs just over 50 staff.

The high-tech supplier of commercial and military electrical equipment has a plant at Luna Place in Dundee Technology Park, and an additional sales and design facility in southern England.

It has supplied components for high-profile projects such as the Type 23 Frigate, Hawk aircraft, Challenger Tank and Eurofighter 2000.

A spokesman for the company told the Evening Telegraph an official announcement would not be made until next week after consultation with the workforce had been completed.

The job losses are the latest in a string of recent blows to employment in manufacturing in the city.

Major employers such as Tesco, NCR and the Wood Group have announced more than 1000 redundancies over the past few months.
