| Big Brother’s fans are to blame |
| I am really outraged at Celebrity Big Brother. You might think I’m talking about Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty, but I’m not.
I’m outraged at the fans. People say Shilpa has been victimised and racially abused. But people who watch the programme know there will be fighting.
They would not watch people getting on for four weeks.
Also nobody seemed to bat an eyelid when Shilpa burst out laughing at Jo O’Meara.
Some of the complaints are that of Danielle and Jo being misinformed about Indian people eating with their hands.
Since when was misinformation a crime? And since when was not wanting to get food poisoning a crime?
People making these complaints need to watch more carefully. — Paul Ross, Dundee. |
| Treated unfairly |
| I THINK Shilpa is being treated unfairly in the Big Brother house.
I have enjoyed watching BB over the past couple of years but prefer it when it’s not the celebrities.
When I began watching this series, I found it quite funny to begin with, but then I felt Jade wasn’t being nice toward Shilpa.
I come from an ethnic background and feel strongly about racism.
Last night I watched a bit of BB but turned it off because of Jade shouting at Shilpa which I thought was totally uncalled for.
Also I found it unbelievable that Jade’s mother couldn’t even pronounce Shilpa’s name and I think she was rude. — Dana Khan. |
| Conduct no surprise |
| ANYONE WHO has been to a pub or club in the centre of Dundee recently won’t be surprised by the conduct of the younger female housemates in Celebrity Big Brother.
Foul language, unseemly behaviour and violence is becoming the rule rather than the exception.
As with every other aspect of society, it is thankfully still a minority but it is a problem growing daily.
We also continue to have a problem with the male equivalent but two wrongs don’t make a right. — Jim Burns, Badenoch Place, Dundee.
| Why no arrests? |
| I DON’T watch Big Brother. However, why have police not arrested and charged any person concerned in racism? — Coldside. |
| Sorting office moans justified |
| I’VE READ numerous complaints about Royal Mail’s Dundee East sorting office.
I was eagerly awaiting a parcel from the USA when my brother, who lives in Kirkton and who deals with the Dundee West sorting office, told me that his parcel had arrived.
I received a call from the sender who said she had posted mine to Broughty Ferry on the same day. I went to phone the sorting office only to find it not listed in the phonebook.
I phoned the Whitfield Post Office and got the number.
On January 9 I was informed by the person on the phone “this office is completely sterile of all Christmas mail”. He then tried to palm me off with a national number.
I phoned the USA who verified everything was clearly marked — then a strange thing happened.
I got a call from the east office on January 11 saying a parcel had just been handed in by the postman. So obviously that sorting office was not “sterile”.
When I got my parcel it had written on it “Treat as abandoned. Return to sender”.
I am a disabled OAP over 80-years-old and my experience verifies that Dundee East performs poorly. — Unhappy Geriatric. |
| Dangerous practice |
| Every SCHOOL day, at approximately 12.40 pm, I watch from my window at least 50 children from Craigie High School running across the busy Arbroath Road in Dundee.
They do the same when returning. It’s just a matter of time before one of them is killed.
Despite several of my neighbours and me complaining to the school, nothing seems to be happening.
I wrote to the new headmaster and received a reply saying, “The Planning and Transportation department are currently investigating other types of crossings on Arbroath Road. Until this happens we will continue to inform pupils that the only safe crossing point is the underpass at the north exit of the school.”
Until he reverses his well-intentioned, but dangerous, decision to deny first year pupils access to the school via Garnet Terrace, each and every one who runs across Arbroath Road is at risk. I can’t believe he is allowing the situation to continue whilst waiting for the planning and transportation to make a decision.
I urge parents to come and witness this situation for themselves. — Extremely Concerned.
[A Dundee City Council education department spokesman said, “The decision to close the Garnet Terrace entrance to junior pupils was taken on safety grounds as it is a vehicle access into the school.
“Pupils at the school are constantly reminded of road safety issues and where they can cross safely. We would also call on parents to reinforce the road safety message to their children.
“The city council has instigated the legal order to reduce the speed limit to 30mph on Arbroath Road and this should be completed by start of next school year.”] |
| Drivers, please pay attention |

Are signs a blur to Dundee drivers in Commercial Street?
| I have come to the conclusion Dundonians are unable to read road signs; namely the ones on Commercial Street informing all drivers that, apart from buses, taxis and disabled vehicles, no motor vehicles are allowed to use the thoroughfare.
To the female driver who was driving through there on Monday, January 8, at 12.30, with children on board, I ask, “If your children were to be hit by a car in Commercial Street and you knew it to be pedestrian-only, how much of a fuss would you make to ensure that the perpetrator was not let off with a slapped wrist?”
Until a child is killed, and that is what will happen, nothing will be done. — Fed Up. |
| Buggy hazard |
| I write concerning mums with their buggies on Dundee buses.
One day, while travelling on a 1A the whole of the aisle was blocked by a buggy and people had to struggle to get past.
This is a safety hazard.
I think drivers should take more responsibility when letting on such large buggies. — Concerned Gran. |
| Lost touch |
| I would like to get in touch with an old school friend as I am coming up to Scotland for my 50th birthday party on February 18. Her name is Arlene Evans, and we both attended Gilburn Primary, Dundee, in the 1960s. I can be contacted in Leeds on 01132 251905 — Linda Holt. |
| Bush deaths |
| ALL INDICATORS are that Saddam Hussein was a terrible person and many people were killed under his regime.
But has anyone compiled the number of Iraqis killed between 1980-2003 under Saddam and under the Bush administration between 2003 and 2006? — Rik S. |
