NCR talks under way
Talks were under way today between management and union officials at Dundee’s crisis hit NCR plant.
Assembly workers were given the day off to fully digest yesterday’s bombshell announcement of 650 job losses. However, the factory remained a hive of activity as negotiations began to thrash out the detail of the restructuring plan.

Discussions are understood to be focusing on when the redundancies will start to kick in and talks will also have to be held with employees to identify the 100 staff who will remain at Wester Gourdie.

Company spokesperson Helen McInnes said every effort would be made to inform staff as quickly as possible of their personal circumstance.

She said, “The production line is not operating today but there are meetings with employee representatives. NCR management will present an information pack to these employee representatives about the plans.

“One of the first things that will be done is a timetable will be proposed, discussed and agreed with all parties.

“NCR is keen to make the situation as clear for employees as quickly as possible, but we do need to adhere to the consultation process. There is a 90-day consultation period that is a statutory process.”

Meanwhile, NCR refused to detail the gap in cash machine manufacturing costs between Dundee and its other plants worldwide.

The firm has said production costs at Dundee were the highest anywhere in its group and the need to cut costs to remain competitive had forced its hand.

High volume manufacturing operations are to be switched to former Eastern Bloc countries and Asia.

Ms McInnes said, “It does cost significantly more on a unit-by-unit basis to manufacture in Dundee.

“I am afraid information is commercially sensitive. It is something our competitors could use to our disadvantage.”
