Dundee deal in Gary
Dundee boss Alex Rae made another important signing today when he fixed up experienced defender Gary Smith until the end of the season (writes Tom Duthie).
Smith has been a star man at the heart of the Dark Blues defence since joining up on loan from Cowdenbeath in November and it has always been the case that Alex was keen to tie him up on a permanent deal during the current transfer window.

Hot on the heels of that deal being concluded and the arrival of Sunderland striker Kevin Smith on loan, there could still be a further new signing before Saturday’s trip to Airdrie United.

No hints were being given on the identity of that target, but there has to be a strong chance the man in question is Clyde skipper Paul McHale.

He’s already been fixed up on a pre-contract for next season and work behind the scene to persuade Clyde to let him move now has been going on all week.

“At this stage, it would not be right to reveal the player’s name because no business has been concluded, but there is a real possibility of us tying up someone else by tomorrow,” confirmed Alex today.

“That would be a boost and it has been good to get Kevin in and get Gary signed up. He has been very impressive since he came here and he has had a big influence on and off the park.”

Alex is also confident that his squad for the weekend will include teenagers Bryan Deasley and Kevin McDonald, both of whom have been hampered by injury in the last couple of weeks.

“I’m suspended, but, if they are fit, we have Gary back from his ban and a couple of new faces in as well, it will give me quite a few options.”
