Shrinking Stillie
Dundee United goalkeeper Derek Stillie is expected to be in his usual place at Rangers on Saturday — despite losing over half a stone in the last week because of a bout of flu (writes Tom Duthie).
Stillie was the hardest hit as almost an entire team have gone down ill, but, despite his alarming weight loss, is on course to be fit by the weekend.

“There are still a few feeling some after-effects and, of everyone who’s been ill, Derek was definitely worst effected. He’s lost 10 lb. and that’s obviously taken a lot out of him, but he trained yesterday and again today, and is not looking too bad,” said boss Craig Levein.

“We have another 48 hours to go until the game and that should give the ones who have been ill time to build up their strength further.

“Right now, I know I won’t have Barry Robson or Lee Mair because of suspension and Steven Robb and Christian Kalvenes are not going to make it because of injury, but I think the rest will be OK.”

The week’s second new signing, Sean Dillon, was paraded at Tannadice today and the Shelbourne full-back will be in the squad for Saturday.

Whether or not the 23-year-old is in the starting line-up or on the bench has still to be decided.

“He worked with us in the gym on Tuesday and did OK, and he trained again yesterday and did well. However, I am aware that it’s a while since he played and I have a decision to make, but he’s already shown he is fit enough to be in the squad.”

The line-up is now 99% certain to be boosted by the return of Noel Hunt for the first time in almost a month. The top scorer has been stepping up his workload all week and trained with the rest of the squad this morning for the first time since damaging ankle ligaments at Motherwell.

“He had a very physical workout with the physio yesterday and I do now expect him to be available,” confirmed Craig.

Dundee deal in Gary
Dundee boss Alex Rae made another important signing today when he fixed up experienced defender Gary Smith until the end of the season (writes Tom Duthie).
Smith has been a star man at the heart of the Dark Blues defence since joining up on loan from Cowdenbeath in November and it has always been the case that Alex was keen to tie him up on a permanent deal during the current transfer window.

Hot on the heels of that deal being concluded and the arrival of Sunderland striker Kevin Smith on loan, there could still be a further new signing before Saturday’s trip to Airdrie United.

No hints were being given on the identity of that target, but there has to be a strong chance the man in question is Clyde skipper Paul McHale.

He’s already been fixed up on a pre-contract for next season and work behind the scene to persuade Clyde to let him move now has been going on all week.

“At this stage, it would not be right to reveal the player’s name because no business has been concluded, but there is a real possibility of us tying up someone else by tomorrow,” confirmed Alex today.

“That would be a boost and it has been good to get Kevin in and get Gary signed up. He has been very impressive since he came here and he has had a big influence on and off the park.”

Alex is also confident that his squad for the weekend will include teenagers Bryan Deasley and Kevin McDonald, both of whom have been hampered by injury in the last couple of weeks.

“I’m suspended, but, if they are fit, we have Gary back from his ban and a couple of new faces in as well, it will give me quite a few options.”

No new Saints in pipeline
St Johnstone are still trying to add to their squad, but nothing is likely to happen imminently (writes James Masson).
Meanwhile, Saints’ managing director Stewart Duff reports tickets for the CIS Insurance Cup semi-final against Hibs at Tynecastle on January 31 are “selling steadily”.

Season ticket and voucher holders can buy tickets at McDiarmid Park until 5 pm tomorrow, with the general sale starting at 9 am on Monday.
