Dundee’s ‘balmy December’
Dundonians enjoyed an almost balmy December with temperatures higher than average, although Christmas Day was more traditional when the thermometer dipped below freezing, albeit without snow.
On December 2, air temperatures of 14.4C (57.9F) were recorded, giving support to many scientists’ argument that global warming is here to stay.

The average air temperature for the month was 4.9C (40.1F), with the early peak of 14.4C sliding back to minus 3.8C (25.1F) on Christmas Day.

Total rainfall for the month was 69mm, slightly higher than the long-term average.

The largest downpour was on Hogmanay, when 14.7 mm fell over a short period in the afternoon.

There were over 60 hours of sunshine during December, considerably more than the long-term average of 42.7 hours.

And there were three days of gales in a month of extremely varied conditions, although a member of the meteorological team at the Scottish Crop Research Institute in Invergowrie said the fluctuations were fairly normal.
