| While police have welcomed the decrease, Tayside road policing head Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman said the numbers being detected and putting themselves and others at risk remained very disappointing.
In the fourth and final week of the festive road safety campaign, 13 drivers were reported for drink or drug driving. Police said 15 drivers who had tested positive in the past four weeks had been involved in a collision, two fewer than last year.
More than 20 drivers were detected as a direct consequence of concerns raised by members of the public who called the police.
The vast majority of drivers caught were men, 58 against nine women who were detected. Nineteen males were aged 25 or under, 36 were between 26 and 55, while only three were over 55.
Three men and one woman were reported for driving while impaired through drink or drugs. One of these drivers was impaired through drugs alone, with the remainder affected by what police described as a cocktail of drink and drugs.
In the past month, 247 people were reported for not wearing a seat belt, 160 reported for using a mobile phone while driving, and 291 drivers reported for speeding. All categories represented a reduction on last year’s figures. |
