Levein wants target man
Dundee United boss Craig Levein confirmed today he is in the market for a striker with physical presence — then immediately stressed he had made no moves to bring former charge Mark de Vries to Tannadice (writes Tom Duthie).
The giant Dutchman was brought over to this country by Craig when he was Hearts boss and together they made the switch to Leicester City a couple of years back.

De Vries has since returned to has native Holland for a loan spell with Den Haag and, although he has the best part of two years left on his contract at the Walkers Stadium, he has said he would like nothing more than to team up with his old gaffer again.

Nice as that was to hear, Craig has made it clear fitness rather than flattery will be a major criteria when it comes to bolstering his squad in the January transfer window.

“I knew nothing about this until I read what Mark was saying this morning and I have not spoken to him. It’s obviously been a case of someone putting two and two together and giving him a call because you can see we need more strikers here and I do think a target man would give us a different option.

“Right now, we are really restricted to playing 4-5-1 and, even if we are looking to change things from the bench, we don’t have the type of striker to alter the way we play.

“Just having that option would be nice and Mark obviously fits the bill, but, although I have identified the need for that type of player, I am not far down the road when it comes to his identity.

“I don’t think Mark has played that much football this year, though I’m not 100% sure on that because I have not been checking on him, and, come January, I will be looking to get players who are match fit.”

That he should be linked with one of his former players has not surprised Craig and with another of his old favourites, Steven Pressley, going through much-publicised troubles at Hearts it won’t come as a shock if he also gets mentioned in connection with a Tannadice switch.

He does not, however, expect to see ‘Elvis’ back in Tangerine — he left United for Hearts in 1998.

“Obviously, Steven’s situation has just happened and you could see him being linked, but I really don’t think he is in our price range just now.

“People know I am looking to add to the squad in January and it will lead to more stories, but I prefer to speak about things once they’ve been done and that’s what I’ll be doing.”

With no SPL reserve fixture this week, a game against Partick Thistle was arranged and several of the players who have been out of the starting line-up since Craig arrived were given a run-out in Glasgow this afternoon.

Cowdenbeath’s French midfielder Morgaro Gomis (20) is on trial at Tannadice.

Rae closes in on veteran defender
Dundee boss Alex Rae’s effort to add depth and experience to his squad was bearing fruit today as he closed in on a loan deal for veteran defender Gary Smith until January (writes Tom Duthie).
Alex believes the former Falkirk, Aberdeen, Rennes, Hibs and, most recently, Cowdenbeath man can challenge for a first-team place, even when there is a full squad available, and can also provide injury cover for his entire back line.

In the summer, the 35-year-old dropped down to the Third Division to help his former Easter Road and Pittodrie team-mate Mixu Paatelainen at Central Park, but was overlooked in favour of ex-Dundee United man Brian Welsh for the manager’s job there when the Finn left for home last month.

Since then, it has been widely expected that he would be on the move shortly and a switch to Dens will give him the chance to focus solely on playing again. His new manager thinks that would be a big plus for the Dark Blues.

“He is a player who adds a lot of experience to the squad,” said Alex.

“He’s played most of his career in the Premiership up here and I believe he is still more than capable of doing a good job in the First Division.

“He can play in every position in the back four and that is important when you have a small squad like ours.

“When Paul Dixon was out on Saturday we asked Craig Forsyth to fill in and he did very well, but if you were looking at cover for a prolonged period it would not be fair to ask kids to do it.”

The deal has been done via the emergency loan system that is now open to clubs between the transfer windows and, if everything does go to plan, Smith will make his debut at Queen of the South on Saturday.

Where exactly he plays is likely to be up for debate, but chances are it will not be at left-back, where Paul Dixon is expected to be ready to retake his berth from young Forsyth.

Sheerin named top player
St Johnstone’s Paul Sheerin was today named the Scottish League Player of the Month for October (writes James Masson).
The midfield man was rewarded for his outstanding displays when he received his prize at McDiarmid Park today.

Meanwhile, Saints No. 2 keeper Kevin Cuthbert is out for two months after undergoing surgery on a finger injury.

Youth keeper Gordon O’Brien has now moved into the back-up goalie position. He’s in the side to face Gretna at home tonight in the Scottish Youth Cup (7 pm). Saints’ Irish youth international forward Andy Jackson will also play.

Saints’ head groundsman Chris Smith has won the Institute of Groundsmanship’s Groundsman of the Year award for the First Division.
