| Bashir Chohan, an executive member of Dundee Islamic Society Central Mosque, said pronouncements urging Muslims not to co-operate with Tayside Police’s Special Branch Community Contact Unit were not helpful, and did not represent the views of the wider Muslim community in the city.
Speakers from the Muslim Association of Britain, Scotland Against Criminalising Communities and the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign all said Muslims should defy any attempts by SBCCU to interact with them at a meeting at Dundee University last night.
Dr Carlo Morelli, of the University and College Union, called on his members not to participate in “monitoring of Asian-looking students” and said there was no place for racism within education.
Mr Chohan said issues raised at the meeting would be addressed during a prayer session at the Central Mosque.
He said, “Dundee Islamic Society and Dundee Muslims have been co-operative with Tayside Police, and they are going to be co-operative. Any criminal activity should be reported.
“That is our rules and regulations. It is straightforward.”
Mr Chohan said no notification of last night’s meeting had been given to members of Central Mosque. He spoke of his disappointment at comments made by Osama Saeed, of the Muslim Association of Britain, urging non-co-operation.
He said, “I don’t think it is a responsible statement from Mr Saeed.
“He doesn’t know Dundee. Dundee Muslims are well integrated into the community, and we don’t have any problem whatsoever.
“I haven’t even met this person, and I don’t think he represents the Muslim residents of Dundee.”
Mr Chohan said elders at the mosque would take the opportunity to address members.
“We are going to get together and have a meeting to officially decide how we can tackle these kinds of people coming from outside. If they had good intentions they would have come to the mosque.
“Our message is loud and clear — obey the law of the land.
“If there is criminal activity, or somebody doing something wrong, then we are not going to tolerate it.
“If it was my own son behaving badly then he would be punished.
“These kind of statements will not help the relationship between the wider community and Muslims.”
