Letters - 07 November 2006
Grave times at NCR
I AM an employee of NCR in Gourdie, Dundee, and have worked there for a good few years.
When told there was to be a new factory in Hungary, management said this new outlet was to supply solely Eastern Europe.

Now, it has transpired this is not the case.

Work has been taken from the Dundee plant and handed to Hungary, where, due to cheap labour, material cost and ease of shipping, the NCR shareholders and management see the future of the company.

I fear management in Dundee have been given instructions from America to trim the workforce.

Everyone employed within the Dundee factory knows things are grave. — Stanley.

Blame globalisation
HOW CAN Dundee West MP Jim McGovern complain about NCR cutting back or even closing down operations in the city? The Labour Party is a supporter of globalisation which results in such action. — George Aimer, Kinhorne Road, Dundee.
Lack of discussion on unit proposals
I HAVE sent a letter to Elaine Zwirlen, director of housing, regarding the homeless unit at Dunbar Park, Whitfield, Dundee. It reads:

“Thank you for your reply regarding Red Admiral Court dated October 27, 2006.

“I and my neighbours are very disappointed that we in Dunbar Park and the surrounding areas are only to receive a newsletter to inform us of the council’s proposals and not a meeting with those few chief officers within the authority who have made this controversial decision to put a homeless unit within a private residential area.

“A Dundee City Council spokesman is quoted as saying consultation is not normally carried out on this type of project.

“This may be the case when siting these units in council-owned estates, but Dunbar Park is a privately-owned estate so we, the owners of the estate, think it is only common decency to discuss these proposals with us.” — Mr George Brown, Specklewood Court, Dunbar Park, Dundee.

Show some common sense
I COULD not believe it when I read in the Tele about the parking tickets issued to the two doctors attending emergencies at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

I nominate Vinci park contract manager David Laurence for The Jobsworth Award.

Come on Mr Laurence, show some common sense. — D. Robertson.

Ludicrous
IT SURELY must be time now for something to be done about parking at Ninewells Hospital.

To put a ticket on a surgeon’s car at 4am is ludicrous.

It is obvious that issuing tickets during the night is only a way of making money. — B. C., Monifieth.

Under threat
IT WAS most interesting to read that Dundee’s Lord Provost John Letford is concerned about his constituents receiving threatening bills from gas and electricity suppliers.

Perhaps he should start by putting his own house in order first.

I received the following demand from Dundee City Council for money that has not yet been agreed. Indeed I am seeing my MP.

“If you do not pay the outstanding Housing Benefit overpayment as detailed below further Recovery Action will be taken such as a bank or earnings arrestment, your details being passed to a Credit Rating Agency, bankruptcy or direct deductions being taken from your Social Security benefit.”

The utility companies can hardly be worse. — Interested Party.

Doesn’t add up
LETTER WRITER Truth Seeker is backing the judgment of the same people who told us that the Scottish Parliament would only cost £40 million.

Indeed, when Alan Wilson, the higher education minister, was asked to back up his claims on the “true” cost of the SNP student loan policy, he was unable to do so.

The real cost is the money that would not be recouped in loan repayments, which is currently £29 million.

So why will it cost £150 million to write off £29 million? — Political Watcher.

Sickened
RECENTLY A man died, and I saw the council or housing association clearing the poor man’s flat of his possessions.

As I looked on, a man, who lives opposite, raked through the dead man’s possessions and helped himself to some items.

I think it is so sick. — Sickened Dundonian.

Save some from life of crime
AS JAILS are over-crowded the authorities should open re-hab centres, as most of the petty thieves are doing time for shoplifting to feed a drugs habit.

If there is a lack of money, use cash from the National Lottery as this might save some youngsters from a life of crime. — Pensioner.

Hero
I AM a parent of a premature baby treated at Ninewells Hospital by Dr Matthias Shwager, who is presumed dead after a boating accident.

What a great loss he will be. Dr Shwager was one of life’s heroes.

I will be eternally grateful to him for my healthy baby. — Grateful Parent.

Dedicated
ONE OF the reasons St Clement’s Primary School in Dundee is doing so well is because of its dedicated head teacher and staff.

I have a daughter there. I also had two daughters who attended Charleston PS earlier and there was nothing wrong with that school then. One of my daughters is now at university. — Parent.

Prize bingo
ST CLEMENTS PTA is holding a prize bingo night on Monday to raise funds towards a Christmas party. Doors open 6.30pm, eyes down 7pm. The 30p admission includes refreshments. All welcome. — Elizabeth Inglis, St Clements PTA, Dundee.
