MP hits out over mail depot ‘sores’
“The buck stops with management” at the troubled Royal Mail Dundee East depot, Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie said today (writes Alan Wilson).
The SNP MP said local management, Royal Mail management and the Post Office minister Jim Fitzpatrick have all “got to get their fingers out” to resolve festering sores at the depot which date back over the best part of a decade.

Continuing problems at the depot, where the spectre of potential industrial action has been raised yet again, is being tackled at Government ministerial level, Mr Hosie added.

More than a year ago the postal services watchdog Postwatch Scotland called on the Dundee East sorting office to get its house in order following a catalogue of complaints, however despite a “ground-breaking” deal between management and unions, which ended strike action in March, the problems have continued.

The situation came to a head again last week when staff withdrew their labour on two occasions, for an hour each time, unofficial action which prompted an emergency meeting between senior union officials and Royal Mail management yesterday.

Stewart Hosie said today, “It seems extraordinary that there are continuing simmering disputes at the Dundee East depot.

“I’ve had constant complaints from constituents about difficulties with their mail from that office. The buck stops with the management because it has to stop with them.

“The situation can’t continue any longer and I would certainly hope that industrial action can be avoided.

“I have previously met with management at the depot, I have both spoken to and written to Jim Fitzpatrick and I await his response.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said, “Management at the Dundee East Delivery Office are working extremely hard with staff to ensure customers get the best possible service from Royal Mail.”

Communications Workers Union Tayside branch secretary Joe Malone was believed to be in meetings today related to the current situation at the depot. A spokesman for the branch said he was unavailable for comment.
