| Dr Matthias Schwager has been missing since his boat capsized in poor conditions while he was out fishing with friends on Loch Freuchie, near Amulree, last Thursday.
The 42-year-old — who is of German descent — failed to make it to shore and has not been seen since.
His companions — a 41-year-old woman, her 17-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son — managed to swim ashore and the alarm was raised.
The police have been searching the loch since the accident and dive teams have been deployed. The search has now been put on hold pending the arrival of a specific search boat at the loch.
There has been no sign of Mr Schwager’s body, but it is understood he is classified as missing presumed dead.
Colleagues at the special care infant unit at Ninewells Hospital were today coming to terms with the loss of Dr Schwager.
A Tayside Police spokesperson today confirmed the identity of the missing man as Mr Schwager of Meigle, Perthshire, where he is understood to have lived with his partner.
The spokesperson said the search for Mr Schwager would continue, with regular sweeps of both the banks of the loch and the water.
He said the Tayside Police search and rescue team and a police boat would be involved in the operation.
Professor Richard Olver, Head of the Division of Maternal and Child Health Sciences at Ninewells, said today, “Dr Matthias Schwager held an appointment as an honorary senior teacher in the University's Division of Maternal and Child Health Sciences at Ninewells.
“Although a busy clinician in the Tayside Children's Hospital neonatal intensive care unit, he always found time for his teaching duties and was an enthusiastic and committed teacher, highly rated by his students.
“He was a much valued colleague and friend to many and will be sorely missed.”
Dr Peter Fowlie, clinical group director of women and child health for NHS Tayside, said, “We have been in contact with Dr Schwager’s family over the past few days and all our thoughts are with them at this very distressing time.” |
