A Dundee mother with cancer will see her daughter dressed as a bride in a charity fashion show (writes Marjory Inglis, medical reporter).
But it will be a bitter sweet moment for Alison Bastiaen, who knows there’s a strong possibility she won’t live to see 16-year-old Tyes or her twin sister Kirsty get married for real.

The mother of three thought she had beaten breast cancer after a mastectomy, radiotherapy and chemotherapy eight years ago.

However, the cancer has returned and spread.

Alison is shop manager at Cancer Research UK’s shop in Lochee, who are organising the show next Thursday evening in the Bonar Hall to raise cash for and awareness of breast cancer research.

“Tyes is a model and we are having a grand finale where everyone will come on as part of a wedding and she is going to be the bride,” said Alison. “It’s just in case I don’t see her later on. You have got to be realistic.”

Alison (46) explained that her twins were only 12 when she was told the cancer had returned and at the time there was no certainty she would live for the rest of that year.

She has been open with her family from the start and explained she may not have an extended future.

“I couldn’t lie because I am a single parent,” said Alison. “They have all had to grow up a bit quicker.”

“I look the picture of health, but the doctors are just keeping me under control at the moment.

“There is not a cure. I won’t get the all clear.

“You have got to be positive. You can either sit in a corner and go ‘poor me’ or get on with your life and have a positive approach. I am still quite young. There is a lot I still want to do.”

Right now she is focusing on the fashion show, which will not only feature stock from the shop but clothes gifted from a designer shop that recently closed down.

Presenting the show will be “Dundee Worthies”, local actresses Helen Brannan and Alison Muir, who will use humour and the Dundee vernacular to make comment on the models and the clothes.

The models are from The Space at Dundee College and the show will also feature local dance group Dance Advance.

There will be full family support on the night with Kirsty helping backstage and son Lachlan (20) acting as chauffeur.

Anybody wanting to support the event can get tickets from Cancer Research UK shops in Lochee and Broughty Ferry or at the door on the night.
