The first intake of apprentices at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for 22 years was welcomed at a ceremony held today.
Would-be plumbers, electricians and mechanical fitters have started four-year apprenticeships, with on-the-job training in the hospital and technical theory at Dundee College.

NHS Tayside received 200 applications for the six vacancies.

The new recruits are the first of a programme that will see the hospital taking on apprentices every year for the next decade.

A ceremony was held today to welcome four of the new trainees.

The ten-year plan has support and funding from NHS Tayside’s Healthcare Academy.

Mr Alan Boyter, strategic director of human resources and workforce development, said, “Investment in local talent is vital to secure our future here in NHS Tayside.

“Providing healthcare is about team working and our doctors and nurses and other front line healthcare workers can only provide a service if we have an infrastructure in place to treat patients.

“That is why maintaining our estate and facilities is central to providing the highest quality of care and we are delighted to be able to take on these apprentices.”
