Wedding day left in tatters

A Carnoustie couple are desperately seeking an alternative wedding venue after their plans were left in tatters by the sudden closure of Monifieth’s Panmure Hotel, writes Lynne Stewart.
Marie Soanes and Paul Forbes booked the venue more than a year ago to ensure they could be married on the date 07/07/07.

They are set to be £500 out of pocket after hotel owners the London & Edinburgh Swallow Group went into administration almost a month ago.

They paid a £200 deposit for the venue and than booked a photographer, cars, a band and a piper — investments they will also lose if they are unable to find a suitable setting for their reception on the same date.

Efforts to find another venue have so far proved fruitless.

“I knew nothing about it (the hotel company going into administration) until I read about it in the newspaper and I immediately phoned the hotel,” said the Marie. “The lady assured me that I would be kept informed and someone would call me with all the details. That hasn’t happened.

“I phoned back when I heard the hotel had shut and the man was very unhelpful and I was told that I haven’t a chance of seeing my deposit again. There was no offer of an alternative hotel or anything. It seems it’s just our tough luck.

“We were to be getting married there as well. We have managed to book the registrar for the date, but we are struggling to find another hotel.”

The couple have been engaged for two years and chose July 7 next year for the big day due to it being a unique date.

Marie said family from England had already organised time off work to travel to Scotland for the wedding and now faced having to make new arrangements.

“If we can’t get another hotel for the same date then everything will have to be changed and we will be £500 out of pocket,” she said.

A spokeswoman for administrators Ernst and Young apologised for the situation.

“The Panmure Hotel has closed and, unfortunately, any deposits taken by the hotel before our appointment on September 14 will not be refunded,” she said.

“This is a very unfortunate situation. Sadly, it is not our responsibility to find other venues for events that have been cancelled.”
