US coup for digital Dundee firm
A Dundee-based digital media company has been commissioned to design some of the world’s best-known games titles for TV channels in America and Canada.
Denki, which supplies Sky TV with interactive games including Shrek, Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and Scooby Doo, has been contracted by Waterfront Entertainment to produce Tomb Raider for a number of North American broadcasters, with Wallace and Gromit to follow.

Director Colin Anderson hopes the deal will be the first of many, and further lucrative markets such as India and China will open up within the next two years.

When Tomb Raider launched recently on Canadian channel Bell ExpressVu, it gave the station the best sales figures it had ever had on a games channel.

Denki and Waterfront, also based in Dundee, have received support and advice from staff at Scottish Enterprise Tayside since each started up — Denki in 2000 and Waterfront in 2004.

“This is a great way for Denki to capitalise on the experience we’ve built up through our work with Sky and take it into the international market,” said Mr Anderson.

“There are huge opportunities on offer and Denki will be well-placed to take advantage. It also means we’ll have to take on more staff.”

More than 2000 people are employed in the thriving creative media sector in Dundee, with innovative young companies launching a range of new products and services. To encourage growth, SE Tayside has developed a 10-year strategy to provide infrastructure to allow the sector to expand in the city, with the creation of Seabraes Yards.
