Helping students find their way

Finding your way around a big campus can be a daunting task for a new student, but there should be far fewer people getting lost at Dundee University now, writes Grant Smith, education reporter.
Staff have come up with the MobileMap, which can be downloaded on to a mobile phone and shows the location of all the buildings plus lots of other useful information.

It has proved so popular with the latest batch of students that more than 750 of them had begun using the service within two weeks of the start of the new term.

The project was co-ordinated by Hannah Whaley, a learning technologist.

She explained, “A joint university and student association survey indicated students wanted clearer guidance on where to find information about available services.

“The MobileMap project is a positive response to this.

“Many students always carry their phone with them, so the MobileMap represents a way of providing students with information, literally at their fingertips.”

Students can use the keypad on their phone to navigate the map and view data about the buildings, the subjects taught in them and other services.

There are details about the location of bus stops and which buses stop at them, where to find places to eat and the campus mini-bus timetable.

Contact information is also available for all student services, so if they want to join the music society or find out about disability services they can find out how.

One word of warning for students, though. MobileMap might help you get to lectures on time, but it won’t write your essays for you!
