Rae hails battling qualities

Dundee’s ROSS HARRIS is stretchered off. It was feared the midfielder had broken his leg, but the injury is not as bad as first thought.

Dundee boss Alex Rae was still singing the praises of his side today following the battling 1-1 draw with St Johnstone (writes Graeme Finnan).
The Dark Blues played the vast majority of Saturday’s game at Dens with just 10 men after striker Derek Lyle was sent off after only seven minutes.

Their cause was further hampered when sub Ross Harris was stretchered off with a ankle injury and, with their three subs already on, the Dens men had to play out the final 10 minutes or so with only nine men.

However, they fought on gamely to make their point and were given a rousing ovation by the home support at full-time.

“The guys showed a tremendous amount of character and I think the fans appreciated that,” said Alex.

“With the international weekend coming up, it was important we didn’t go into that on the back of a defeat.

“But, results elsewhere mean we’ve been able to make up ground on some of the teams above us.”

Alex was taking another look today at video footage of the Lyle sending-off, which the club is likely to appeal.

There was also relief at Dens that midfielder Harris’ injury wasn’t as bad as was first feared. The former Celtic man was taken to Ninewells Hospital after the game with a suspected leg break.

However, an X-ray revealed no fracture, although Harris needed stitches inserted into the wound.

He’s likely to be sidelined for two to three weeks.

“The boy is relieved because he thought he’d suffered a break. It is good news for him and for ourselves,” added Alex.

Another couple of absentees from training this morning were goalkeeper Scott Murray and midfielder Kevin McDonald, who are away on international duty with Scotland U/19s.

Brew: Things will turn for us
Dundee United boss Craig Brewster today vowed to keep battling away as he bids to pull his side away from the foot of the SPL (writes Graeme Finnan).
The Tangerines were on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline at Hearts yesterday, but, not for the first time this season, the manager felt his team were hard done by.

“We were excellent in the first half and had chances through Noel Hunt and Stuart Duff,” said Craig.

“Then Hunt scores and, for some unknown reason, the goal is chalked off. But Hearts are ruthless and we end up going in at half-time 2-0 down.

“I’m not one for making excuses, but in the game against Hibs we were denied a penalty when it was 0-0. The same thing happened against Motherwell when we didn’t get a penalty when it was 1-1.

“But football can be a cruel game at times. We’ve got to keep battling away and I’m sure things will turn for us.”

United reserves are due to meet Inverness Caley Thistle at Station Park, Forfar, tomorrow.

Taking part in that one is likely to be Lee Wilkie, who will be making his third and final appearance as a trialist for the club.

Craig is poised to make a decision on whether or not to offer the former Dundee central defender a contract at Tannadice.

Chance to recover
With no game until a week on Saturday, when Gretna visit, St Johnstone have a chance to get their injured players fit, apart from long-term casualties Kevin Rutkiewicz and Kevin James (writes James Masson).
Several Saints players took the field against Dundee although not fully fit and the break will give their injuries a chance to clear.

Meanwhile, Jason Scotland has jetted off to Trinidad & Tobago to play in two home friendly matches against Nicaragua on Saturday and Panama next Wednesday.

Andy Jackson is off to Macedonia with the Republic of Ireland U/19s and Mark Gallagher is Romania-bound with the Northern Ireland U/19s.
