Capital role for Smith
Short-term signing Grant Smith was handed a first game in Dundee United colours when he turned out for the reserves at Hibs this afternoon, and chances are he’ll make it a capital double at the weekend with a first-team debut at Hearts (writes Tom Duthie).
Smith, son of BBC TV and radio pundit Gordon, looks set to be vying with Stuart Duff for the attacking midfield role just behind lone striker Noel Hunt at Tynecastle on Sunday.

The 26-year-old can also play in a deeper midfield role and his career in England with clubs like Sheffield United, Swindon and most recently at Bristol City has seen him operate as far back as the left side of defence.

It’s his goal threat in particular, though, that has caught boss Craig Brewster’s eye and he is hopeful Smith’s initial three-month deal will lead to a longer stay at Tannadice.

“Grant has impressed me so far. He’s strong, experienced and can score goals from midfield. If he does that for us, we’ll talk about extending the contract,” said Craig.

Smith was available because he negotiated his release from Bristol just before the transfer window closed last month and Craig will continue to look at other free agents between now and the window re-opening in January.

With his youth and reserve teams showing big improvements this term, in the coming months he is hopeful of being able to strengthen the first team from within the club.

He said, “The players in the youths and the reserves know they will get a chance if they are doing the business — David Goodwillie is still eligible at youth level and he’s been involved in the first team, so it shows others the opportunity is there.

“I’m very happy with the way the youth team has been progressing. When we arrived they were bottom of the league and now they are at the top and unbeaten. That says everything about the job Stevie Campbell is doing with the kids.”

Meanwhile, the manager was also set to feature this afternoon, as was Steven Robb, who played for just under an hour against Motherwell at the weekend, but is still needing to build up his match fitness.

Deasley won’t be rushed
Dundee boss Alex Rae would like the option of Bryan Deasley’s pace on his bench against St Johnstone on Saturday, but feels it’s too early to say if the teenager will make it (writes Tom Duthie).
Deasley returned to action with the youth team only on Sunday after a few weeks out with ankle trouble and, as much as he wants him available for the Tayside derby, the manager will not rush his young striker back.

“We have big Robert Campbell’s strength as one option on the bench and Deasley’s sharpness would give us another alternative, so it would be good to have him back in the squad,” said Alex.

“However, he’s had only 45 minutes back and we’ll need to see how he progresses over the next couple of days in training before we decide if he can be involved in the first team as soon as Saturday.”

Long-term absentee Gary MacKenzie, meanwhile, is making good progress after his ankle operation and could be back working with the rest of the squad inside a month.

“He’s coming on well and is now walking unaided by crutches and working in the gym.

“We thought it would be about six weeks before he was back and I’d say he is still on course to hit that target.”

Saints new man shines
St Johnstone manager Owen Coyle was “chuffed to bits” with new recruit Paul Lawson in yesterday’s 1-0 home Reserve League Cup win over a strong Partick side (writes James Masson).
Paul was signed on loan from Celtic on transfer deadline day, but has been out with a stress foot fracture, although he did make a late substitute appearance in the CIS Cup win over Dundee United.

Yesterday’s 90 minutes was his first for Saints, and Owen said, “He was great in the game.”

Veteran Jim Weir was also in the Saints’ line-up, with Owen himself playing up front alongside Andy Jackson and Peter MacDonald.

Peter is also making his way back from injury, and Owen added, “There were a lot of positives to take out of the game.”

He was “delighted” with the showings of his young players, stating, “I really was thrilled with how the kids performed.”

Saints had five young lads in their starting line-up and one of the youngsters, Bobby Barr, son of the former Hamilton player of the same name, scored Saints’ goal.

Meanwhile, Saints’ CIS Cup quarter-final against Rangers at Ibrox will be played on Wednesday, November 8 (7.45).
