Mother inspired citizenship programme
A Dundee College lecturer launched a new citizenship programme today.
Special Programmes teacher Paula Ewen was inspired to set up the First Steps Citizenship Award after her mother, Veronica Assenti, suffered a stroke last year.

The new programme is designed to instil in the students basic citizenship skills to help people in her mother’s position, and interact with the community.

Awards available will include recognition for fundraising and problem-solving.

The course will be taught with the help of Tayside Police as well staff from the college.

“My mum knew the students well as she used to give up her free time on a voluntary basis to go ice-skating with them and support them in art classes,” said Paula.

“When she was left immobile by her stroke, my students were very concerned for her.

“They wanted to do something to help.

“What the students will be doing is tracing the route, identifying both the physical and the less tangible obstacles, that someone in my mother’s position has to overcome between leaving hospital and getting in her front door.

“I have great faith in the students’ abilities to not only gain a lot in terms of personal development but also to help make other people’s lives easier through the First Steps programme.”
