Getting wrapped up in a record bid

Wendy Farquharson

A Perth bid to get into the record books is in danger of disappearing under a mountain of wool.
Loose Threads in St John’s Place is co-ordinating the bid to knit the longest scarf in the world — but staff are beginning to realise the magnitude of their charity effort.

The world-record scarf is 22 miles long and while the Perth bid stands at only three miles it is already causing a headache for the business.

“We really need storage,” said Wendy Farquharson of Loose Threads. “I feel we could do better — at this rate it will take us 10 years! I want it finished earlier than that.”

The attempt has already raised hundreds of pounds for chosen charities, Help the Aged and CHAS.

During National Knitting Week, from October 14 to 21, Wendy hopes people will drop in to the shop to help sew pieces together while having a coffee and a chat.

As well as storage, she would like other knitting shops to get involved and encourage their customers to make some metre-long sections.

Donations of double knitting wool would also be appreciated.

Details of the business are available on its website, www.loose-threads.com
