| The event — in which 14 miniature motorised vehicles had to tackle various problems — was held to mark the end of a new course designed to help new students settle in to university.
The ASPIRE to Computing course — organised by the institution’s Wider Access Study Centre — was designed to introduce the students to a range of academic skills necessary for success at university, which they start for real in a week’s time.
Report writing, note taking and using the library to retrieve information were among the topics included in the two-week course.
The second element was an introduction to computer programming — which gave them the skills to build the Lego robots.
Lecturer Iain Murray, course co-ordinator, said, “The ASPIRE course will ensure these students hit the ground running at the start of the semester and are ready for the university experience.
“The robot building is a microcosm of engineering, requiring them to use their programming skills to solve problems.” |
