957 noise complaints in three months
A Dundee team, created to turn down the volume of late night noisemakers, has investigated 957 complaints in its first three months, writes Stefan Morkis.
The noise nuisance team, which is made up of enforcement officers from Dundee City Council’s health and trading standards department, began work on June 5.

In just three months since then, they have received 957 complaints about anti-social levels of noise.

These range from reports of loud music being played late at night, DIY being carried out at inappropriate times and even dogs barking throughout the night.

Of these complaints, 402 people were given verbal warnings and 67 people have been given written notices.

A further 12 people have been given fixed penalty fines of £100.

If the fine is not paid with 28 days, the offender can be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

A person can only receive two fixed penalty notices, as any further breaches will be reported for possible criminal prosecution.

Under anti-social behaviour legislation, officers can also confiscate stereos, televisions and even CDs and cassettes, although the Dundee team has not yet been required to do so.

The noise nuisance team works from 7pm until 7am each night and deals with an average of around 10 complaints per evening.

Funding for the team, which consists of nine enforcement officers and two administrative support staff, has come from the Scottish Executive.

More than £1 million has been provided to run the service over the next two years.

A spokeswoman for Dundee City Council said today that they had been pleased with the success of the noise nuisance team so far.

Anyone who is concerned about noise in their neighbourhood should initially contact the police.

They will then forward the details to the noise nuisance team.
