| Firefighters’ conscious decision |
| THE GLASGOW firefighters being disciplined for refusing to hand out leaflets during a gay rights march is ridiculous.
The nine were not being homophobic, but had made a conscious decision that they would rather not do it.
Are those in authority now saying that if we do not conform to what the gay community want then we are being homophobic? I find the whole situation appalling. — Society Gone Mad. |
| Secrecy |
| I was disappointed to learn that the SNP doesn’t intend to publish the findings of its recent survey in Dundee on crime and independence.
Instead Councillor Joe FitzPatrick urges the public to contact him direct.
Why the need for secrecy?
I would have thought the SNP would want to tell everyone about the findings.
Like others who took time to reply, I think the public deserves more. — S. Mitchell, Edengrove, Downfield, Dundee. |
| Late noise |
| THERE HAVE been complaints from residents of the Graham Street, Barnes Avenue, Granton Terrace and Downie Park area of Dundee about late-night noise from the football field.
There is also a major problem on Saturday and Sunday afternoons with people bawling, shouting and swearing at games.
Tayside Police should get involved or supply us with free double glazing.
After all, the Chief Constable got free double glazing. — BA Buster.
| Long wait |
| I HAVE been waiting about 11 weeks now to have a sewer cover replaced or repaired.
Scottish Water does not appear to be interested. Three of their people have looked, the last on August 4. He told my daughter he could not lift the cover because of its weight, but he did move it and it is now worse than ever.
This is dangerous and unhygienic. — Fed-Up Taxpayer.

| Search for relatives |

| I am searching for three Melville women who lived in the Dundee area during the Second World War.
Helen, Mary and Doreen are cousins of my now deceased grandfather John (Jack) Harrington, who was stationed in the UK from 1940-42.
His father William was originally from England, and his mother Jessie Carney was from Scotland, but both moved to Canada in the very early 1900s.
I believe Jessie’s sister Mary married a Melville, and lived in the Dundee area where she had her family.
I enclose a photo. The two people on the left are, I believe, my grandfather’s cousin Helen Melville, next to her mother Mary Melville. The rest of the wedding party is unknown to me, as is the date of the photo. — Mark Fenton, 74 Bluebell Crescent, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada S6J 1A2 (e-mail: fenton@hotmail.com) |
| Barmaid refused to serve us |
| I went to the Post Office Bar in Broughty Ferry on August 27 with a friend.
When we finished our first drink we asked the barmaid (manageress) for another but she refused to serve us.
We were dressed okay, not drunk and not causing any bother.
She said she didn’t have to tell me why we were not being served.
I was taken aback and asked again, but she still wouldn’t explain. She just kept saying she didn’t have to explain.
The only reason I can think of is it might have something to do with the fact that my friend is black.
I could see it in his face he thought the same.
I have never been so embarrassed and angry in my life.
I would really like to find out the truth. — Daryn.
[A spokesperson for the Post Office Bar said, “The individuals concerned had been served already, which clearly diminishes the claim of racism.
“However, under Scottish licensing law, licensees and their agents retain the right to refuse service without giving any reason whatsoever.
“In this case, as with others, we respect their right to exercise discretion in terms of who they serve.”] |
| Astra ad query |

| CAN THE Tele tell me who sings Rain On My Parade in the new Astra advert?
I think it is Pat Kane, from Hue and Cry, but hubby begs to differ. — Debbie McRither, Dundee.
[Sorry, Debbie, but Vauxhall assures us the voice belongs to 60s legend Bobby Darin, who died earlier this year.] |
| Support for councillor |
| I READ the letters about Allan Petrie. There are many people who remember him as a hard-working councillor and an active member of many local groups.
He will get a lot of support on the basis of his record, rather than his party label. — Kate Domm, Dundee.
| No surprise |
| IT WAS no surprise that two individuals have attacked me for joining the Lib/Dems. My decision was one I took after taking a four-year break from party politics.
During that time I was able to look at all the policies and behaviour of the mainstream parties and the Lib/Dems stood out.
I do not look for power — at any cost — but look for changes that will benefit the citizens of Dundee.
I see the best way of doing that is through the Lib/Dems. — Allan Petrie.
| Health hazards |
| A FRIEND and I were in Dundee’s Murraygate when a dozen or more seagulls swooped on the people there.
Some were tourists from the USA and Canada. One asked if every Scottish town is as filthy, with black bags ripped opened by gulls.
He said they were getting out of Scotland as soon as possible because of health fears. — Terrified.
| Advantages of oil |
| I SEE that Stavanger in Norway has far superior facilities for youth football than Dundee.
Would this have anything to do with the fact that its oil revenue is kept in Norway whereas Scotland’s goes south? — Gerry McGuigan.
| Better than nothing |
| ACCORDING TO Interested Party, a self-governing Scotland would have only a few oilfields.
It seems to me that the rights to a few oilfields would be better than the present situation — the rights to none at all. — Scottus.
| Albatross |
| INTERESTED PARTY points out that Scotland will have only a few oil fields come independence.
As the discovery of black gold has seen Scotland become poorer than the rest of the UK, perhaps we can be rid of this albatross and go on to be as successful as Ireland, Iceland, Luxembourg, Belgium and the other oil-free, small European nations. — The Watchman.
| Bus puzzle |
| WHEN IS Travel Dundee going to communicate with its bus drivers?
I inquired which was the official bus stop at the 29 bus terminus in Dunholm Road and was told it was the one erected recently.
So why do some drivers continue to stop at the old one and wave passengers over? If you question this you get cheek. — Irate.
