| Perth and Kinross Council introduced the by-laws in Perth, Blairgowrie, Alyth and Crieff on February 24, which met with approval from the Scottish Executive.
The council have outlined various measures in an effort to curb binge drinking and now they will consider a request from Errol Community Council for similar measures to be put in place in the Carse of Gowrie village.
Michael Almond, a member of Errol Community Council, said today, “At the last meeting I was asked to write to Perth and Kinross Council to ask them to consider designating Errol an alcohol-free zone (no consumption of alcohol in public places other than on licensed premises).
“There is an ongoing problem of young people (mainly, but not exclusively, over 18 years of age) drinking on the streets and in the park and making a nuisance of themselves.
“The police officers at the meeting indicated they would welcome such a move, and felt it would make their job easier.”
And police in Perth confirmed they are reviewing the matter.
Chief Inspector Roddy Ross said, “There is interest from various communities across Perthshire in introducing the by laws under the Civic Government Act (Scotland), similar to those in place in Perth, Blairgowrie, Crieff and Alyth.
“I am currently consulting with the local communities who want to see the ban introduced and will be liaising with the council on this.”
Perth and Kinross Council have arranged a meeting for Wednesday, September 13, at which the issue will be discussed.
A spokesman said, “A report on the general issue of bylaws and how to deal with requests such as the one from Errol about alcohol is going to the next meeting of the modernising governance member officer working group.
“This should help set a timetable and process for dealing with these issues.”
Consultation on the by-laws already in place took place between the council, the police, the procurator fiscal and the respective community councils. |
