| Bob Norrie and little Matthew finished Sunday’s challenging 47 miles — which started at George Square in Glasgow and finished at Roseburn Park near Murrayfield in Edinburgh — in four hours and 16 minutes.
Matthew, who started Invergowrie Primary School only this year, has been taking part in the event with his Dad for the last four years.
As a baby he completed the first two years strapped into his seat in a trailer attached to his Dad’s bike and last year Matthew managed to pedal some of the way.
This was the first year he managed to pedal the entire route on a tag-along bike.
Matthew received special recognition as the youngest participant in the 2700-strong event and met Edinburgh’s Lord Provost Lesley Hinds, a native of Dundee.
The oldest participant in the challenge was 81.
Dad Bob has been a keen cyclist all his life and has many gruelling challenges under his saddle, including the 24-hour endurance race, Sleepless in the Saddle, which involved five people completing as many laps of a course as possible in the timescale.
He has also completed the 24-hour Salomon Mountain Mayhem event three times. Bob said his enthusiasm for the sport has rubbed off on Matthew.
“He sees me cycling and he loves it, too. It’s a bit of a Dad and lad adventure,” said Bob.
“We often go off to Tayport, Carnoustie or Perth and he enjoys it.
“He’s been taking part in this event since he was a baby and this year he pedalled the whole way and managed to complete it in 4 hours 16 minutes.
“He was the youngest participant and he was pleased he met the Edinburgh Lord Provost and had his picture taken with her. He did really well.”
The event was in aid of Leukaemia Research. |
