Dundee murder: partygoers quizzed

Police investigating the murder on Dundee’s Hilltown.

Police in Dundee were today quizzing people who attended a party in the Hilltown tenement where a man was murdered, writes Graham Huband.
Detective Chief Inspector Ewen West said a number of folk, who attended the party at number 118 on Monday night, had voluntarily agreed to be interviewed.

DCI West also officially confirmed the force is treating the death of father-of-two Shaun McBeath (25) as murder.

He would not be drawn on how Mr McBeath, who was originally from Arbroath, came by his injuries, other than confirming he had been attacked with a weapon.

DCI West said today, “Mr McBeath was at this party during the late evening and into the early hours before returning to a first-floor flat in the block where he had been staying.

“This is where police were called to and found him fatally injured.

“We have already spoken to a number of people who were at the party, but I appeal to anyone who saw Shaun during Monday and into Tuesday, whether at the party or elsewhere, to come forward.

“Furthermore, I want to hear from anyone who knew the deceased as they could provide us with valuable information.

“We have already spoken to a large number of witnesses who have provided us with valuable information, but I urge anyone who hasn’t spoken to us, and who can assist, to get in touch.

“We have received a lot of assistance from the public, but there might still be someone who has a significant piece of information.

“I ask them not to assume any information they might have is trivial. All information is useful and people should not hesitate in contacting us.”

A formal identification of Mr McBeath’s body was made last night and a post mortem examination carried out.

Forensic examinations were continuing today at the block — bordered by McDonald Street and Rosebank Street.

Officers are combing the tenement and the area to the rear of the building for clues, as well as carrying out further door-to-door inquiries and reviewing CCTV footage.

DCI West said the hunt was still on for a man seen leaving the close about 3.50am — around 40 minutes prior to police being called to the scene — and heading into the city centre.

He is between 20 and 35 years old and was wearing a light-coloured baseball cap and a jacket and was carrying a rucksack and a plastic bag.

Officers are also keen to speak to any taxi drivers who may have picked up fares in the Hilltown — particularly in Alexander Street and Victoria Road — between 3am and 5am.

Anyone with information can contact the police on 01382 591940 and 591941. People can also speak anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
