Eddie’s new cancer battle

Eddie Thompson at Tannadice today.

Dundee United’s chairman, Eddie Thompson, faces a new battle with his cancer, which has become “more aggressive” and spread to his bones, writes Bruce Robbins.
The chairman, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer three years ago and underwent unsuccessful radiotherapy at the time, is now having his treatment moved up a level.

Today, the club moved to quell media speculation about Mr Thompson, who has become a “regular visitor” to Ninewells Hospital.

However, Mr Thompson said his work at Tannadice was continuing as before.

The club said that recent blood tests to measure the strength of the cancer have dictated that more needs to be done to counter the disease.

On the advice of his consultant, Mr Thompson was taken into hospital last week to undergo a more advanced treatment, particularly applicable for counteracting cancer in the bones.

He has also moved onto a new course of advanced hormone treatment, but it is too early to evaluate the results of these latest treatments.

Mr Thompson has been undergoing hormone treatment for the past 21 months and that has been completed.

He thanked the management and staff at Ninewells, who, he said, had been “extremely supportive”.

He added, “None of this is affecting my on-going duties and I’m putting in virtually the same hours.

“I’m still as dedicated to the club as ever and in my support for the manager and his ambitions.

“I’ve helped the club with short term cash flow problems in the past and will continue to do so.

“This will also include additional finance for the manager to strengthen his playing squad, an example of which is the latest signing of Christian Kalvenes from Brann Bergen F.C. in Norway.”
