A group of three environmental students have joined Hillcrest Housing Association for eight weeks of the summer holidays.
The students from Abertay, Dundee and St Andrews universities, will work on a variety of sustainability projects such as, developing a business plan for a community paper recycling initiative and implementing an environmental management system.

Duncan McLaren, who is studying natural resources management at Abertay, will be responsible for researching the most cost-effective improvements measures Hillcrest can use to improve the energy efficiency of their hard to heat homes.

“Improving energy efficiency levels will lead to a reduction in tenants’ energy bills and also provide a better quality of life,” said Duncan. “From Hillcrest’s point of view it will enable them to meet government targets as well as reinforcing their position as a first class housing provider.”

All three students are about to begin their final year in their respective courses and they expect the Hillcrest placement to help them secure a job on graduation.

Dundee University geography and environmental science student Rhona Scott will look at early steps of implementing an environmental management system.

Caroline King, a geography student at St Andrews will develop a community recycling project.

John Mulloy, Hillcrest Chief Executive, said, “We strive to improve on our current way of working to ensure we have a minimal negative impact on the environment.

“On top of this I am pleased we can offer three local students the chance to gain such important experience before progressing to their final years of their degrees.”
