| Simon Donaldson, manager of the Overgate, said today negotiations with the store that will anchor the extension were progressing well and that construction work on the project would take around two years to complete.
Dundee City Council approved the 242,000 sq-ft extension in February, but, because of the tremendous scale of the project, the plans had to be referred to both the Scottish Executive and Historic Scotland.
They both said they had no objections to the proposal last month, finally signalling the green light for the project, which will help boost Dundee’s position as one of the leading shopping centres on the east coast.
The proposals include plans to extend the two-storey retail centre of the current centre and expand the five-storey car park.
The building at 26-36 North Lindsay Street will be demolished to make room for the extension.
The extension will double the size of the Overgate, providing room for a food court as well as 40 new retail units.
Mr Donaldson said today, “We’re working through the negotiations with our anchor store and we understand the city council is progressing well with its discussions with the land owners.
“Once work is under way, we are talking about a maximum of two years to complete the extension.” |
