Kalvenes signs on

Dundee United boss CRAIG BREWSTER welcomes CHRISTIAN KALVENES to Tannadice.

Dundee United have completed the signing of Christian Kalvenes from Brann Bergen for a fee of around £50,000 (writes Graeme Finnan).
The 29-year-old left-back joins up on a two-year deal after impressing as a trialist, and goes straight into manager Craig Brewster’s plans for Saturday’s trip to face Rangers at Ibrox.

The Norwegian will add experience to the United rearguard, which came in for criticism following the opening-day defeat to Falkirk at Tannadice.

His capture also kills off any prospect of Celtic left-sided defender Charlie Mulgrew returning to the club following a successful loan spell last season.

“First and foremost, Christian brings a wealth of experience to the club, which is what we’ve been needing, especially in that area,” said Craig today.

“We’ve been using Barry Robson and young Ross Gardiner there, but it is Christian’s natural position and we’ll benefit from that.

“As long as he comes through training this week without any hitches, he’ll be in the squad for the Rangers game.”

Craig is still keen to bring in another goalkeeper and a midfielder. The Tangerines have a clean bill of health for the weekend.

Meanwhile, as one new man comes in, there is still no movement on the impasse which sees free-to-leave pair David Fernandez and Paul Ritchie remain at the club.

Ritchie featured, and scored, as a mainly young United XI. beat Carnoustie Panmure 3-1 in a friendly at Laing Park last night. Willie Easton and Stuart Abbot were United’s other scorers, while Iain Wilkie netted for the Gowfers.
