| Dark Blues boss Alex Rae has been in touch with his former Sunderland team-mate and newly-installed chairman/manager at the Stadium of Light Niall Quinn, and has fixed up striker Kevin Smith (19) to have a look at.
The player was due at Dens today and, as well as watching him in training, Alex is looking at the possibility of using him at Arbroath on Saturday.
“I’ve known big Quinnie for a long time and I’ve also spoken to the chief scout down there, Dave Bowman, and they think this lad is capable of doing a job for us, so we’ll have a look and see how he is,” said Alex.
And, before the start of next week, others are likely to arrive for trials as Alex continues his drive to add depth to his squad.
One player who will not be joining up, though, is Keith Shevlin. After turning out for Dunfermline against West Brom on Tuesday, Shevlin was back in dark blue last night as a young team beat Berwick Rangers 3-0.
He has not, however, done enough to convince the manager he is worth a contract.
“We’ve had a long look at Keith, but we’ve decided it is not something to pursue and I’ll be looking at other options. We should have a few bodies in over the next day or so, and we’ll be checking to see if we can use them at Arbroath and maybe against Rangers on Tuesday.”
Missing those games is almost certain to be broken wrist victim Danny Griffin, though it is still hoped that, by wearing a lightweight cast, the experienced defender will make the league opener against Partick Thistle at the end of next week. |
