STRIKER ON TRIAL
A friendship with the English Championship’s newest manager has led to another new face heading for a trial at Dundee (writes Tom Duthie).
Dark Blues boss Alex Rae has been in touch with his former Sunderland team-mate and newly-installed chairman/manager at the Stadium of Light Niall Quinn, and has fixed up striker Kevin Smith (19) to have a look at.

The player was due at Dens today and, as well as watching him in training, Alex is looking at the possibility of using him at Arbroath on Saturday.

“I’ve known big Quinnie for a long time and I’ve also spoken to the chief scout down there, Dave Bowman, and they think this lad is capable of doing a job for us, so we’ll have a look and see how he is,” said Alex.

And, before the start of next week, others are likely to arrive for trials as Alex continues his drive to add depth to his squad.

One player who will not be joining up, though, is Keith Shevlin. After turning out for Dunfermline against West Brom on Tuesday, Shevlin was back in dark blue last night as a young team beat Berwick Rangers 3-0.

He has not, however, done enough to convince the manager he is worth a contract.

“We’ve had a long look at Keith, but we’ve decided it is not something to pursue and I’ll be looking at other options. We should have a few bodies in over the next day or so, and we’ll be checking to see if we can use them at Arbroath and maybe against Rangers on Tuesday.”

Missing those games is almost certain to be broken wrist victim Danny Griffin, though it is still hoped that, by wearing a lightweight cast, the experienced defender will make the league opener against Partick Thistle at the end of next week.

PLAYER POWER CAN PLAY PART
Player power could provide Dundee United’s best hope of getting the three Inverness Caledonian players boss Craig Brewster wants to be central figures in his new-look Tangerines (writes Tom Duthie).
Relations between the player-manager’s present and past clubs dissolved into a bitter war of words last night over his long-running attempt to land defender Darren Dods, midfielder Ian Black and utility man David Proctor.

When he left ICT in January, Craig agreed not to move for any of his old players before the end of last season and, as soon as that campaign was over, he made enquiries about the trio. He has continued chasing them throughout the summer.

With less than 48 hours to go until the SPL opener against Falkirk, he is still trying to get his men.

That has not pleased the Highlanders, and chairman David Sutherland has accused United of unsettling his players and also made it clear he is not now prepared to sell any of them.

Hitting back, the Tannadice club issued a statement stating they had conducted their business in a proper manner and revealed they had now made fresh written bids for all three.

United have also said they believe the players want to speak to them and, however much ICT do not want to do business, are obviously hoping that could be a key factor in forcing a deal through.

It is understood Dods, in particular, wants to end his spell in the Highlands and could push hard to be allowed to at least listen to his old boss’ offer.

For his part, Craig was remaining diplomatic today and happy to await developments on these and another potential signing, Norwegian Christian Kalvenes.

“The situation is we have submitted fresh bids for the three players and now we will wait and see what Inverness have to say.

“I’ve also been speaking to Christian again this morning and will be back on to him later. He’s back in Norway talking things over with his wife, which I understand.

“I’ve told him, though, we want a quick answer and I need to know one way or another by the end of the day.”

Meanwhile, last night’s Scotland U/19 win over the Czech Republic in the European Championship semi-final in Poland means Greg Cameron and Garry Kenneth, who featured, will still be on international duty on Saturday and miss the Falkirk clash.

Also out of the reckoning is teenager David Goodwillie. It has been confirmed he has broken a bone in his foot and is out for four to six weeks.
