Letters - 10 July 2006
Scene from OK Corral
WHERE IS society going with the repeated failure of parents and police to stop the small minority of youths who seem to be hell-bent on causing havoc?

In Broughty Ferry on July 3, it was like a scene from the OK Corral. Four youths were walking down the centre of Gray Street — swaggering with defiance and refusing to move for cars.

It was like they were untouchable.

I then went around to King Street and saw a youth (about 13) on his bike wavering around the road, deliberately blocking the path of a female driver who was forced to brake repeatedly.

If the thugs who deliberately put their lives at risk had become involved in an accident I fear that the driver would feel the full force of the law and the thug would get compensation.

Is this me being cynical? — Montrose Reader.

Churchill statue: have your say
LETTERS PROPOSING the erection of a statue of Sir Winston Churchill in Dundee have raised the hackles in some quarters.

An opinion poll might give a clearer picture of how the land lies.

Churchill has been accused of prejudice against women, being a bad loser and even duping the residents of Lochee into sacrificing their park railings (in 1940) for the war effort.

I think statues are a relic of the past, they are a target for vandals, roosting birds and are costly to maintain.

But if I was asked to choose between a statue to Churchill and the monstrosity which is proposed for the site near the art college in Perth Road, I would have no problem over choice. —R. F., Broughty Ferry.

[The issue of a statue for the former Dundee MP has been debated in the Letters page for some time. Now the Tele offers readers the chance to express their opinion in a simple poll on the issue. All you have to do is call our vote line on: 08700 500 236

When prompted, follow the online instructions to vote either YES or NO to the proposal to have a statue of the Second World War leader erected in Dundee. ]

Even councillor couldn’t help
I LIVE near Ninewells Hospital and have been trying to get my girlfriend a parking permit as she stays with me four nights out of seven each week.

I have been told she cannot get one as she is not a resident.

So the question — where does she park?

She can park for two hours at a time in a visitor bay between 10 am and 6 pm and can stay overnight as long as her car is moved by 8 am the following morning.

Either that or she could leave her car in another part of Menzieshill.

I cannot register her as staying with me as my Council Tax will go up by 25%.

I cannot go on to her driver’s insurance as her premium would go through the roof because I don’t drive.

I asked my councillor for help, but even he cannot do anything.

I pay my rent and council tax like everyone else but am not entitled to a parking permit. — Angry Resident.

Frivolous platitudes
GMTV amazes me with its whimsical reporting on the floods in the US.

How can the presenters manage to exchange frivolous platitudes on their satellite link-ups when there is a sea of troubles afoot.

Is no news item worth a “straight to the fact” approach? — J. I. Matthew.

Lost touch
I’M TRYING to contact Sheila and Jim Monaghan and their sons. They lived in Findale Street, Dundee, until 1978, when Jim’s work took them to Erskine, in Renfrewshire. We kept in touch and visited often.

After another move to England I have lost their address. Their sons are James, who would now be about 29, and Andrew, around 24. If anyone can help, phone 01382 774285 or email McghDenn@aol.com — Mrs E. Mcghee, Balunie Avenue, Dundee.

Labour’s good record on candidates
LETTER WRITER EIS and Proud is right to point out the importance of trade unions in Dundee’s political history.

Contrary to the writer’s assertion, I am a trade unionist and a member of my recognised workplace union.

I also believe strong trade unions have an essential role to play in Dundee’s economic future and in maintaining the shared ethos of equality and social justice on which the Labour movement has been built.

It is to the local Labour Party’s credit that we have a record of selecting candidates that hold true to these values. Long may this continue. — Michael Marra.

What a choice
WHAT A choice the Labour Party appears to be giving itself in the Dundee West seat for Holyrood.

Is there no chance that there is an articulate, hard-working, public service-supporting trade unionist out there?

Jim McGovern, the MP for the area, has shown that people with experience of real life is what the people want. — Socialist and Realist.

Pet holidays
IN REPLY to Responsible Dog Owner. I have been to several superb holiday cottages, from Crieff to Oban and Fort William, that do allow, and indeed welcome, pets.

Without exception, these have been of an excellent standard of cleanliness and facilities.

There are several books and websites available that list accommodation where pets are welcome. — Don D. Mann.

Street name
I BELIEVE Bell Street in Dundee was named after Thomas Bell, a manufacturer.

He was provost of Dundee from 1828-1831. — G. C. Anderson.

They need your prayers
I CAME across this little quip from Uri Geller.

He said, “Go to a hospital. Stand outside and look up at the window.

“Whoever might be inside — a child, a parent, an old man or woman — say a prayer that they will be well soon.

“They need your prayers more urgently than you do because you are on the outside of the hospital.”

Perhaps we can all think of that as we mull over the problems of life. — George Aimer, Kinghorne Road, Dundee.
