| Housing association Home in Scotland has converted the old Edward Street Mill on Forest Park Place into 30 apartments and four homes.
Mr Letford said he was delighted to be opening the development, which sees a Category A listed building being re-used for much-needed affordable housing.
“This is the third mill that has been converted in this area and I am very pleased to see the old buildings are being used for something so positive,” he said.
“There used to be a lot of life and laughter in the buildings, and I’m pleased they are coming alive again.
“Home in Scotland is supplying the need for affordable housing in Dundee and it is an excellent scheme.”
The apartments and homes are now fully occupied, with the last few residents moving in at the end of last year.
Former MP Iain Luke gave a speech about the origins of the mill and the importance of the Blackness industrial area to the regeneration of Dundee.
Chief Superintendent Ian Alexander then presented a Secured by Design award to Vice-Chair of Home in Scotland, John Rogerson.
Secured by Design is the UK Police flagship initiative supporting the principles of ‘designing out crime’ by use of effective crime prevention and security standards for a range of applications such as doors, windows and locks.
Rosaleen Kelly from Home in Scotland said, “The last of the tenants have moved in now and we are delighted to be officially opening Forest Park Place today.
“The residents are developing their own tenants association to give them a say on how things should be done and make them feel part of the community.”
Home in Scotland provides over 2500 affordable homes across Scotland. Their properties include a mix of houses for rent and shared ownership, ranging from one-bedroom flats to larger houses for families. |
