| Smoke signals |
| I LIVE in Balunie Drive, Dundee, near the Tayside Police Station. |
| I am always annoyed to look from my window and see employees standing on the street smoking. Some of them are there at least six or seven times a day. This surely is a waste of taxpayers’ money.
I know people get addicted to tobacco, but could Tayside Police not find somewhere else for these smokers to go rather than rub the taxpayers’ nose in it? — Disgusted. |
| Centre needs safety barrier |

The narrow pavement outside Lochee Swimming & Leisure Centre.
| HOW ABOUT Dundee City Council spending money on something worthwhile?
There is a need for a safety barrier outside the main entrance to the Lochee Swimming Baths.
The pavement there is barely two feet wide.
Any chance of a Tele cameraman taking a photo? — C. A. Walker, Lochee, Dundee. |
| Too many gulls |
| I READ the population of Dundee is in decline. However, not so the seagull population.
Year after year their numbers increase and they are gradually taking over the city.
The council takes no action to deter these birds from nesting and breeding in urban settings.
The amount of droppings in and around the city centre is unsightly and must be a public health hazard. — Not Bird Fancier. |
| Comments |
| AS AN individual who suffers from a disability, I take extreme umbrage at the recent comments made by the chairman of NHS Tayside, Mr Peter Bates.
Once again, this time in a letter to MSPs, Mr Bates attempts to justify immoral parking charges for disabled people at Ninewells Hospital.
Mr Bates wrote in a letter to Health Minister Andy Kerr saying, “There has been ongoing misuse of these spaces by people displaying the blue badge, parking all day for free and not being the badge holder”.
I take it that Mr Bates has evidence to support this claim.
If so why doesn’t he put this evidence into the public domain?
How many people have been caught abusing the blue badge parking system at Ninewells?
People can have the badge removed for abuse. — Cyncial Tam. |
| Benefit cheats |
| TAXI DRIVERS in Dundee moan that their earnings are being reduced due to an increase in cabs.
But how much are they losing due to benefit cheats?
Taxi driving has been a magnet for these people for years.
With badges due for renewal next year, maybe it’s time something was done about this.
A simple line on the application (are you claiming any benefits?) could bring an end to the problem, as it’s a criminal offence to lie on these forms. — Tax Paying Cabbie. |
| Emissions |
| I READ that in Portsmouth drivers are going to be restricted to 20mph. Part of the reason is to keep down emissions.
Do these experts not know it is difficult to keep a car in top gear at 20mph? Trucks and buses will never do it.
This means that most vehicles will be travelling Portsmouth in third gear, spewing out even more muck. — Interested Party. |
| Clean slate on immigration |
| THE HEAD of the immigration service is floating the idea of an amnesty for illegal immigrants in 2007.
He wants to start with a clean slate when e-borders come in. The problem of illegal immigrants will therefore disappear.
Controlled immigration is not wholly undesirable, but since 1997 we have operated an open-door policy.
They don’t tell us this but the reality is that anyone who wants to come to Britain can do so.
The Government only pretends to have a policy that limits immigration.
Globalisation, which the Government advocates, means that jobs and people must move freely across borders.
This is the economic policy, driven by big business of one world, one economy.
E-borders (whatever they are) won’t work either. All the Government has to do is to look as if these e-borders might work until after the next election or amnesty. — Economic Observer. |
| Loss of park |
| I WONDER if anyone knows the history of the Tay Bridge park, under the bridge approach roads in Dundee?
This is planned to be destroyed in August to become a materials site for the reinforcement of the rail tunnel.
It seems to be a big secret, although it was confirmed at a recent community council meeting.
Everyone was very apologetic that they had to destroy more than 70 mature trees and beautiful walkways which are enjoyed by so many people each day.
I am hoping that someone knows if this park had been created in exchange for another green area taken when the bridge was built or given to the people of Dundee in any way.
I am told that the Tay Bridge Board owns the land.
Time is short to effect any change in the proposal.
If anyone has any information that would assist a campaign to halt the change, email me or send it through the post. — Jill Darling, 14J Peter Street, Dundee, DD1 2EW. drdavid.darling@virgin.net. |
| Same name |
| I READ with interest the article in Thursday’s Tele about the new £20 million Sir James Black Centre at Dundee University.
Has the university forgotten that it already has a Sir James Black Centre within the university’s medical school at Ninewells Hospital?
Using the same name for two different establishments a few miles apart is going to cause problems. — Medic Mike. |
