| Internationally renowned chef Nick Nairn visited a school of the outskirts of Dundee today to promote ‘berry good’ Scottish food, writes Claire McCormack.
Nick performed a cooking demonstration to around 41 children from Auchterhouse Primary School as part of a campaign to raise awareness of fresh Scottish produce.
The event was held in association with speciality berry growers Angus Soft Fruits.
Nick has recently returned from cooking for 350 VIPs at a lunch to celebrate the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
John Gray, commercial manager for Arbroath-based family-run Angus Soft Fruits, said, “Nick first tried AVA Strawberries at last year’s Royal Highland Show and has been a great supporter of ours ever since.
“Being a father of young children and a culinary expert, he can talk with great conviction about the need for enjoyable healthy eating, which is precisely what AVA berries deliver.”
AVA is a branded strawberry created and launched by Angus Soft Fruits as a strawberry that only they grow. The berries are nurtured and hand-picked with the greatest of care in Tayside, Fife, Perthshire and Kincardineshire and the season runs from mid-May to early October.
The strawberries are unique because they are the only type that holds their petals, but most importantly they have a mouth-watering aroma and a rounded flavour.
As well as giving a cookery demonstration, Nick shared with the children the first commercially prepared Baby AVA — extra small fruit that are “small in size but big on flavour”, according to primary 4 pupil, Eilidh Lockhart.
The chef also announced the launch of a competition to raise awareness amongst children of the diversity and quality of fresh Scottish food. |
