An iconic Dundee landmark is set to feature on thousands of postcards destined for Europe, wrtes Claire McCormack.

Maggie’s Centre appears on the 42p European postcard stamp included in a new Royal Mail issue showcasing modern architecture as part of National Architecture Week.

To mark the inclusion of the centre, a special framed print of the stamp was delivered to Valerie Busher, fundraising co-ordinator for the centre, by Royal Mail staff David Lorimer and Steven Davie today.

David, a delivery office manager, and postman Steven, are the top two Royal Mail fundraisers for Maggie’s Centre. Both are based at Dundee West delivery office. David has raised over £11,000 through various events for the centre over a number of years, and Steven recently participated in the City of Aberdeen 10k run along with his sister Gillian.

He presented a cheque for £450 raised from their efforts along with the framed print.

The special presentation pack, featuring six stamps, will go on sale from tomorrow and can be bought from any post office branch for £3.95.

They can also be obtained by calling the Royal Mail order line on 08457 641641 or by visitingwww.royalmail.com/stamps. Built in the grounds of Ninewells Hospital, the Dundee building is the third Maggie’s Centre to be built.

The building, Los Angeles architect Frank Gehry’s first in the UK, is situated on a hill overlooking the Tay estuary and landscape beyond.

During the design process, Gehry built over 70 models before finally settling for two key elements: the tower, inspired by lighthouses, and the asymmetrically folded roof for the main body of the building, based on a shawl worn by a woman in a Vermeer portrait he had seen with Maggie Jencks, pioneer of the setting up of the cancer caring centres.

Valerie Busher said, “We are absolutely delighted to receive this kind gift.

“It is something we will treasure.

“We are bowled over that the Maggie’s Centre in Dundee was chosen to be included in the set of Modern Architecture stamps. It is a real honour.”

The Modern Architecture issue showcases some of the finest new buildings built across the UK since 2000.

The five other buildings featured on the stamps were designed by UK architects.

They are the ‘Gherkin’ building in London (The Swiss Re Tower); An Turas Ferry Shelter on the Isle of Tiree; Selfridges building in Birmingham; Downland Gridshell in Chichester and The Deep in Hull.
