Lottery funds diverted to London
SCOTTISH LABOUR MP Jim Sheridan asked in Parliament whether devolved bodies will be expected to make any financial contribution towards the London Olympics.
Tessa Jowell, Minister for Culture, Media & Sport replied there would be no direct funding from any of the devolved authorities but the lottery will be a major contributor to the costs of the Olympics with some diversion of funds from other good causes.

So, indirectly there will be a consequence for the devolved administrations and the areas they represent.

Lottery funding that might go to Scottish good causes will be cut to help fund a huge infrastructure project to the long-term good of London.

Londoners can enjoy a huge party in 2012, the long-term benefit of the various sports buildings and Scotland can enjoy the cuts that are coming our way for the next six years! — Brian Nugent, Free Scotland Party.

Healthy, happy upbringing
I WRITE in response to Dundee Reader’s comments with regard to homosexuality.

I am a gay man and I have never had any “bad” experiences with the opposite sex.

I had a very healthy and happy upbringing.

I have been asked to consider donating sperm to have a child. Dundee Reader suggests I could not be a good father.

I have many friends who are gay and have children and they are young, bright kids who respect society and do not judge others as some young kids do from other families. — Live and Let Live, Dundee.

Equal rights not ‘PC’
THERE IS nothing PC in affording the same rights to gay couples as straight couples. To suggest that equal rights is silly or a fashion is to attempt to deny members of society the rights others enjoy.

There are many same-sex couples who have afforded loving homes to children who have been badly neglected or abandoned by their heterosexual birth parents.

Study after study has shown children who grow up in same sex family environments are valued more and perform better academically than their counterparts.

Thank goodness that not everyone thinks along Dundee Reader’s lines. — Jeff Duncan, Dundee.

Not the only animal
DUNDEE READER stated man is the only animal with homosexual relationships.

In an article in National Geographic Magazine in July 2004, it was reported that homosexual and bisexual activity is not unknown within the animal kingdom and went on to document the case of two male penguins at New York’s Central Park Zoo who have pair-bonded for six years.

Homosexual activity has also been found among wild birds like flamingoes, Japanese macaques, bonobos (closely related to chimpanzees, which are closely related to man) and dolphins. — Townie Tam.

Bring our boys home
I WRITE to complain about the way the MoD is abandoning soldiers who get injured in Iraq.

I watched Channel Four News recently, and it broke my heart to see a wee 18-year-old with part of his leg missing who, it seems, had just been left. They don’t look after their troops, no wonder young guys won’t join up.

Tony Blair doesn’t care. John Reid doesn’t care. No one cares for these troops, only their families who have to pick up the pieces. Bring our boys home.

I have never got over my son going to Iraq at 19 years old. They do a hard job and they do it well. We are proud of them all. — Troopers’ Supporters.

No bins
THERE IS a lack of dog bins on the tarmacked path that runs parallel with Balunie Drive next to the Dighty.

As a regular dog walker in the area, I think it is a disgrace the council supply bags free of charge to dog owners but fail to supply bins to put them in. Walkers then just throw the bags away in the grass verges. — Eric Grieve, Balunie Street, Dundee.

Cannot afford
ONE EVENING recently, I watched for about 30 minutes as six or so Contract Services employees stood around joking and chatting in Baxter Park, whilst two of their colleagues leisurely raked over some earth.

It was 5.30pm, so I guess they were into overtime.

I would be interested to know on what grounds parks overtime is sanctioned.

This seems to be yet another example of throwing money away that the council, or rather the council taxpayer, simply cannot afford. — Don D Mann.

Both sides
LETTER-WRITER Alan Hinnirchs of Dundee Palestine Solidarity talks about Israeli atrocities against Palestinians, but what about the 18,000 terrorist attacks against Israel and the continued call for Israel to be destroyed by some sections of the Islamic world?

Israel may act violently at times and this needs to be condemned, but what about Iran, whose president says the holocaust did not happen.

I support a fair solution for both sides. — J. N. Dundee.

Losing custom
ONCE AGAIN Scotland’s political leaders have been found wanting, this time with their remarks over which country they’ll be supporting at the World Cup.

Both Jack McConnell and Alex Salmond would do well to remember that this country has a sizeable English population that plays a vital part in Scottish life.

Nor should they forget the English tourist ploughs more than £3.5 billion annually into the Scottish economy. Scotland is in no position to upset them and risk losing their custom. — D. A. B.

Another country
TO THE reader who suggested Jack McConnell should join the SNP for not supporting England in the World Cup. I say we live in a democracy and if an individual chooses to support another country what is wrong with that?

Scotland is a separate country to England. — Jeff Duncan, Dundee.

Never a Scot
AFTER ENGLAND won the World Cup in 1966 and Scotland beat them in 1967, Alf Ramsey (as a Tottenham schools player I used to talk to him from time to time) said he would never pick a Scot to play in a Great Britain team. — Gerry McGuigan.
AGM
Whitfield COMMUNITY Safety Panel are holding their annual general meeting tomorrow at 6.30pm in the meeting room, 101 Whitfield Drive, the housing block. Anyone living in Whitfield is welcome to come to the meeting. — Bob Greig MBE.
