| Cypex, a leading manufacturer of proteins which help the pharmaceutical industry develop potentially life-saving drugs, says the move from the nearby Technology Park will bring “enormous benefits” for its work and research.
The seven scientists at Cypex make human proteins, which they then supply to pharmaceutical giants around the globe who use them in the early stages of drug development.
The highly-specialised business was started in 1998 by doctors Michael Voice and Mike Pritchard as a spin-out from research at Dundee University.
Dr Voice said, “There are enormous benefits for us in moving to a building which has been designed especially for the work we do.
“We’ve created two laboratories, a darkroom and other facilities in a high-quality working environment with room to expand in future.
“The move has allowed us to double our production capacity to meet the increasing world-wide demand for our products.
“We have customers from all over the world visiting us to see our work and this is a fantastic location which reflects very well on us.”
The MediPark, a 25-acre site immediately west of Ninewells Hospital, is being jointly developed by Scottish Enterprise Tayside and NHS Tayside with assistance from the European Regional Development Fund.
It offers innovative companies the chance to develop laboratory, production and office space on a greenfield site close to Dundee Airport and the city centre.
Cypex have been supported throughout by SET and were helped to relocate to the MediPark.
The economic development agency contributed around £130,000 funding to the project, which had an overall cost in the region of £580,000.
The new 5000 sq ft HQ is about four times larger than the previous Cypex premises.
Attracting the first occupant to the MediPark has been a struggle, despite extensive marketing exercises both at home and abroad.
However, Cypex is expected to be joined shortly by another Dundee company, Alchemy Laboratories Ltd., which announced last year that it will be moving to the MediPark. |
