You’d ‘batter’ Believe it

A Dundee pub has given the “tartan treatment” to a snack designed to help cheer on England in the World Cup, writes Lee Mackay.
When Mars bars were renamed Believe to support the Auld Enemy in Germany, more than a few eyebrows were raised north of the border. In fact, sales of the snack apparently plummeted among fed-up Scots.

But Braes bar, on Perth Road, has decided to turn its growing stock of Believes a touch more Scottish — by deep-frying them.

Staff will serve up the delicacy during tomorrow’s England v. Paraguay game in the hope it makes Scotland’s absence from the World Cup a little easier to swallow.

Manager Scott Clark, who came up with the idea after chatting to regulars, thinks the complimentary deep fried Believes will aptly replace the usual half-time pies.

Scott, said, “We couldn’t quite believe it when we heard Mars were renaming the snack just for England. It was the last straw for some patriotic Scots here in the bar.

“Therefore, we have a mountain of the Believe bars just waiting to get the tartan treatment.”

Scott added, “We have a mix of customers supporting all different countries, including quite a few England supporters who are looking forward to tasting their first battered Believe bar.”
