Pipe band a resounding success

People from in and around Forfar were blown away by the first performance of the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland outside the central belt.
Around 500 people packed into the town’s Reid Hall to listen to the cream of the country’s fledgling musical talent perform.

The evening was the brainchild of local couple Kenny and Alison Ross, whose son Glenn is a member of the band catering for 12-18 year-old pipers and drummers.

They secured the backing of band director Paul Warren to bring around 40 musicians to Forfar and harnessed the support of town businesses and individuals to ensure they were well looked after during their stay.

Town bagpipe maker Ian Murray also volunteered his services to help organise the event.

Gordon Rogers, who teaches piping in Perth schools, agreed to compere the evening.

Bill Carr and Dr Peter Dick opened the concert with a series of songs, setting the mood for the night, with youngsters of Roselea Ceilidh Band starting the second half.

During the evening Glenn (14) performed a piping duet with Emma Buchan, of Falkirk, before they each played solo spots to the acclaim of the audience.

Money raised from the extravaganza will support the band’s work with young folk.
