| The former Rangers man had been in San Francisco attending a supporters’ function as he completed one of his last tasks for the Ibrox club.
However, on his arrival back in this country first thing this morning, he focused his attention on the job in hand — rebuilding the Dark Blues into a side capable of challenging for promotion next season.
And he admitted that former Dundee United and St Johnstone man Danny Griffin, who was recently released by Aberdeen, is one of many targets he has in mind.
Dunfermline and Partick Thistle are also said to be keen on the defender, who can also operate in the middle of the park.
“I spoke to Danny before he went on holiday, but he is just one of a number of players we’ve been in touch with,” said Alex.
“Obviously, I don’t want to name names because that would just alert other clubs.
“What I need to do now is speak to Dave McKinnon to find out just where we are, because I haven’t really touched base, so to speak, for the last few days.”
Alex is due to be at his Dens Park desk tomorrow and another of the tasks in front of him is speaking to the players who have been asked to take wage cuts.
Lee Wilkie, Tam McManus and Steven Robb all fall into that category and, while the new gaffer accepts that taking a wage drop isn’t pleasant, he points out that the club must operate within its means.
“It’s very difficult asking players to take wage cuts — I’ve been there myself,” added Alex.
“But they simply must understand the present financial climate we are working under.”
Should Robb fail to accept terms, it could alert neighbours DUNDEE UNITED.
Tannadice gaffer Craig Brewster is known to be an admirer of the left-sided wing-back.
St Mirren are said to be showing an interest in Dundee midfield man Garry Brady.
ST JOHNSTONE hope to add to their squad by the end of the week (writes James Masson).
The Perth club have been linked with several players, but are staying tight-lipped about their targets. |
