Browbeaten over flats development
Dundee CITY Council allowed themselves to be browbeaten into allowing the University of Abertay to build its student flats at the foot of Lochee Road.

A lovely view up from the Marketgait towards the old DRI building will be obliterated and another piece of grass will be built on.

These flats are being built for a transient population, with the only Dundonians likely to spend any time in them being cleaners.

I have, through my work, been fortunate to meet many students from outwith Scotland and most stayed in student accommodation for only a short time.

On asking why they moved out, they stated the flats were too dear. I can’t imagine the rent for the new ones being more affordable.

I do not believe these flats were necessary for the long-term viability of the university and the talk of leaving the city was a bluff.

One of the advantages of living in Dundee is the range of views, with river, hills or green space round practically every corner.

Bit by bit these are disappearing and a trip to the riverside will soon be required to see the Tay.

If the council keeps following its current planning trends, Dundee is just going to turn into one of these horrible, ugly, sprawls found throughout the UK. — Jimmy Kick.

Great attendance delayed clean-up
IN REPLY to the article about Kingoodie Quarry. As there were not enough rubbish bags, because nobody expected such numbers to turn up, the quarry was finally cleaned up on Monday night.

We think the quarry is a great spot as we have visited it every summer on many occasions to go swimming since we were young.

The main reason this weekend party was organised was to make up for failing to get Radio 1 Big Weekend tickets. So we organised our own.

There was no “small baby” present. Who on earth would bring a baby to a male-only drinking weekend?

Tayside Police visited to check there were no problems or illegal activity, and were very polite and understanding. — Menzieshill’s Big Weekend.

New arrivals

AT LAST, spring is finally here. I know it is because there are cygnets paddling along behind their parents at Dundee’s Swanie Ponds. — Maryfield Reader.
What have they got?
MINISTER FOR Europe Geoff Hoon has congratulated Montenegro on its independence from Serbia.

Can someone explain why the Government believes that Montenegro can survive as an independent nation, but Scotland can’t?

What exactly has Montenegro got that Scotland hasn’t? — Political Watcher.

Preposterous comment
LETTER WRITER F.R.R. SAYS Scotland is a poor country.

This is preposterous when you compare Scotland to other small countries.

If it is so, then it is a sorry comment on 300 years of Unionism.

Political Watcher asks from where do I get the notion that the people of Scotland want the SNP in power? Actually I don’t have that notion at all.

The SNP produced a poll a short time ago asking people which party they distrusted the most. The answer was the SNP. I don’t trust them myself.

D. A. B. says he is at a loss to understand why I would think that Unionists would turn turtle and vote SNP. I never said that. I agree with D. A. B.

For some 40 years I have been of the opinion that Scots are frightened of independence, especially the SNP — Gerry McGuigan.

Not subsidised
Leading MEMBERS of the Scottish Labour Party have conceded that Scotland is not subsidised by Westminster.

The Government’s own figures show Scotland has on average been in surplus in the last 20 years while the UK has been on average in deficit.

And if the Scottish people “ignore the SNP at election time” goodness knows what they are doing to the Conservatives and the Lib Dems. — Stewart Hunter, Buttars Road, Dundee.

Protest wrong
DISNEY HAS brought happiness and pleasure to countless families and children. So it was wrong when Palestine Solidarity staged a protest outside the store in Dundee.

This organisation don’t seem to mind the death hate/cults against Israel. Hamas says Israel should be destroyed.

Israel has a right to exist as a nation. — J. N., Dundee.

Time for a slow down
TRAFFIC SPEEDS on Camperdown Road, Dundee, every hour of the day. It is time the authorities took action. — Blinded-By-Speed.
Plugged in all the time
DUNDEE IS full of megalomaniacs. It’s a bold statement but based on hard evidence.

Look around and I’m sure there will be one nearby.

The symptoms are an air of self-importance and a need to be able to “network” with the nation at any given time.

They are easy to spot.

They are the ones wearing mobile phone headsets but don’t have a taxi. — Stylemastergeneral, Kinghorne Road, Dundee.

Eurovision Song Contest
BRITAIN HAS to stay in the Eurovision Song Contest, otherwise it would probably be taken off the air.

This would deprive us of one of the most appallingly comical programmes of the year.

It’s great that such a tasteless show can have such wide coverage. — Ferry Reader.
