Maggie’s Centre stamp of approval

Sir Bob Geldof and architect Frank Gehry at the opening of the Maggie’s Centre in September, 2003.

The Maggie’s Centre in Dundee has been chosen as one of six iconic post-millennium buildings to feature on a set of Royal Mail stamps, writes Stefan Morkis.
The set, launched on June 20, will feature the Frank Gehry-designed Maggie’s Centre at Ninewells Hospital on the 42p stamp.

The other buildings depicted are 30 St Mary Axe in London, better known as The Gherkin; a Selfridges store in Birmingham; the Downland Grinshall open-air museum in Chichester; An Turas on the Isle of Tiree (a shelter for passengers waiting on the ferry); and Hull sea-life centre The Deep.

The Maggie’s Centre will be issuing a commemorative postcard with a view of the centre, the Royal Mail stamp and a special commemorative cancellation as part of their fund-raising efforts this year.

As the cancellation will only be applied on June 20, it is expected to become a prized collectors’ item.

The cards will be available for £2.50, plus post and packaging.

A limited number signed by the architect Frank Gehry will be available at a later date.

All proceeds will go to the centre’s running costs — around £300,000 per year. The cards can be bought online at www. maggiescentre.org, or by post.
